Garbage Strike Talk

There's nothing quite like a strike to get the blood boiling, huh? For either side. Want to polarize a conversation really quickly? Say such-and-such group shouldn't be striking. Look out. Someone will defend them, either from a general workers' rights angle or because they're part of a union or because they have a family member in one.

As for me, I get why we need unions. The ugly side of human nature tends to take advantage of people in low-power positions. Management will do whatever it can to make money, even if it sometimes means taking advantage of someone. They'll rationalize it somehow.

On the other hand, strikes make me crazy. There are certain vocations or certain situations where I completely disagree with their position. And in today's global economy, certain demands are ludicrous. It's such a confrontational style of conflict management.

But I haven't yet found a conversation about strikes that doesn't get heated, even in nice Christian conversations. Which usually makes the evil side of me want to get one started!

So good luck Toronto with all your garbage! Good thing the heat finally showed up this week.
